The large open space just above the centre of the picture is Bridge End. A wide road snakes away from here, past a large building which is the bus garage. Behind this, a new line has been cut into the landscape, running across the top of the picture. This line shows work starting on the new bypass road which was constructed at this time, to provide work for local men who were unemployed. These relief schemes helped families where the father had been out of work, often for several years.

In the top centre of the picture is Picktree Lane passing the

Northern bus Garage and houses on the right. To the left are allotments, many of which are still there.



The wide open space just below this, which looks like a market place is known as Bridge End. The chapel is on the corner, with the war memorial opposite. The market wasn't in this area of the town because the Burn was still open. At this time the market was situated between Station Road and Osborne Road, part of which was a cattle mart. The picture shows the road bridge at Bridge End. There was also a wooden foot bridge. Both bridges crossed the Cong Burn.
