The Thames and Medway Canal, running from Gravesend to Strood. Work commenced in 1800 but the canal was not completed until 1824, it opened on the 14th October that year. Originally estimated to cost £24,576 the final cost was £260,000. In 1845 a railway line was laid through the Higham tunnel, although barges could still pass through. In 1846 the canal was purchased by the South Eastern Railway who filled in the stretch through the tunnel and laid a twin track line through to Strood. |
