Swann's Leather Goods and Stapleton Tyres were about here in the 70s I hope I have location 'Pinned' correctly - Swann's sold my parents a top grade leather breifcase for my schooling. |

Watford had overtaken St.Albans as the premier town in Hertfordshire in the 1880s and would retain this pre-eminence until a century later, when the rapidly growing New Towns of Hemel Hempstead and Stevenage edged slightly ahead. In 2001, the census returns showed Hemel top with 82,074, followed by Stevenage (80,973) and Watford in third place with 79,726 people. This will have changed again a decade later, with Watford's population estimate of 90,301 just higher than the figures for its principal rivals. |
