There seems to be no building line as the line of houses bears no straight relationship to the road. Why and how did this happen. New buildings are planned and laid out in relation to the road. |

The Dolphin Inn. Licensed in 1931, the name was transferred from the Dolphin Inn in the West Quarter when the West Quarter was effectively rehoused in the newly built Burnthouse Lane and surrounding areas. |

These trees lined a walkway from Dryden Road to Burnthouse Lane and were still standing into the 1970's. They may still be standing today. |

This old oak tree was in this field until the 1950's. I have always recalled attending a fair on this piece of land in the 1950's as a young child and in the back of my mind was an old tree. Thanks BFA you have confirmed my memory served me well! |

4 Spenser Avenue where my grandparents lived from when the house was built until 1974. It really is an incredible emotion to see this house recently built and a white bedsheet hanging in the back garden which would have been hung up by my grandmother. Very moving. |

An excellent example of the 1930's suburban sprawl into the countryside as the Garden City movement campaigned for better housing and residents in overcrowded, insanitary properties moved into new council housing. This photo shows the first phase of Exeter's Burnthouse Lane Housing Estate built to accommodate the removal of occupiers of Exeter's oldest area, the West Quarter, where infant mortality and death rates were amongst the worst in the UK and up to three times higher than the rest of the city. |
