ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS ~ The actual studio blocks. These large studio buildings are in the gardens at the rear of numbers 3 and 5 Abbey Road. The famous entrance is through number 3. They were formally opened on 12 November 1931, with Sir Edward Elgar conducting the London Symphony Orchestra, i.e. 32 months before this photo. The studios were a project of The Gramophone Company Ltd (HMV) which merged with the Columbia Graphophone Company Ltd (Columbia) in March 1931. The merged entity was called Electric & Musical Industries, EMI. (NB: Yes, 'Graphophone' - 'gramophone' was a trade-marked name when the Columbia company was incorporated.)
