Close examination shows that the fire engine in the bottom right appears to be doing 'hard suction' of water from the canal which is then being pumped along the near bank and then across the canal by means of the barge that has been swung across the canal. There are several hoses across the barge and there are further fire engines (patially hidden) in the street top left - tapped in to hydrants?



I wonder what modern day fire fighters would make of the whole set-up?

This is not in Ladywood, the canal in the picture is the Worcester and Birmingham Canal approaching its junction with the Birmingham Canal Navigations at Gas Street Basin which is prominent in the top part of the photograph. The street running parallel to the canal is Gas Street, we are very close to the city centre here.
