Harrison's little Shipyard at Bill Quay. Years previously when boats were wooden, the yard was run by a family called Boutland. The photo is from my www.oldtyneside.co.uk site. More pics again are on my other site www.gatesheadeast.co.uk

This was the Tharsis Sulpher & Copper Works in Hebburn. The company had copper mines in Spain so the ore would have been brought to the riverside Staiths for smelting into copper at the works.

What looks like a new sub-station for the electrification of the South Tyneside Line. However it appears there are still steam trains running as there is a wisp of steam in Pelaw station, unless that is a Sunderland train. The junction here has been much altered as part of the separation of BR and Metro lines and the grade separation of the South Shields and Sunderland lines.

This is Pelaw Station. The South Tyneside Line was electrified by the London and North Eastern railway in 1937, complete with very modern looking sliding door trains. These featured spaces dedicated to the carriage of prams. It was another 50 years before such facilities became more generally available on UK public transport. Indeed even in Tyneside there was a set back when British Railway replaced the trains in the 1950s with 'Southern' type slam doors stock. In 1963 BR de-electrified the lines (the new trains returning south) with the remain services operated by diesel trains. Perhaps the most fitting endorsement of the NER's original electrification policy for the North Tyneside Lines in 1907 and the LNER's extension to the South Tyneside Line in the 1937, is that eventually all of the routes were re-electrified in the early 80s as they became part of the Tyne and Wear Metro network, and once again the north east has set a new standard of suburban rail transport. This was the first of the new generation of light-rail - tramway systems, that has been copied in a number of major cities across Britain.

A North Eastern Railway gantry signal box. A similar one at Hexham is a listed building. Probably built in the 1870s, after the requirement for the interlocking of railway points and signals came into place. These gantry boxes gave excellent sighting of trains under the signalman's control, but also provided a solution to adding boxes to an established system, where space was limited.

A glimpse of three of Hebburn's lakes. The first one was known as 'Sandy Bottom'. The one on left nearest the Park railings was 'The second Lake'. The one to the right was 'The Island Lake' as it was covered in bushes & shrubbery where Mute Swans & various ducks nested. The lake out of shot & a bit further east was simply known as 'The First Lake'.
