site of old Hammersmith & Chiswick railway station, closed to passengers in 1917 and subsequently demolished. There existed a goods marshalling yard behind this station after its closure to passenger traffic, until it and the station were demolished and the whole site redeveloped. |

F.S Latter Ltd. Builders merchants and general ironmongers . There is an easily available catalogue from 1938 that coincides with this photo. I stayed many times with the family who lived 'above the shop', the Toslands, with Dennis Tosland being the general manager. My times here were predominantly from 1948 onwards during my childhood, and the air was punctuated during the day by the sound of railway wagons being shunted on the adjoining marshalling yard behind the old Hammermith & Chiswick station, and the swish of trolleybuses travelling along Chiswick High Road at night, the trams in the photo having made way for this supreme example of London Transport vehicle. |
