Manchester Exchange Station. The bulk of the station is on the West bank of the River Irwell and therefore actually in Salford.
An LNWR station opened in 1884.
From 1920 platform 3 was extended over the Irwell and joined (then) platform 11 at Manchester Victoria, forming a single platform of 682m. Victoria's platforms have since been reduced and renumbered.
The station was closed 5th May 1969, the site is now occupied by a car park (although lines continue through the site, from Victoria station). |

Victoria Bridge Street, built 1839, replaced a 14th C bridge "Salford Old Bridge", which in turn was on the site of an old fording point- the ford of Sal ford. (Ford by the sallows). The 1839 bridge is single arch, sandstone, grade 2 listed.
Alongside is an old illustration of the three arch Salford Old Bridge with Manchester Cathedral beyond. The Cathedral is outside the aerial image, close to the bridge but off to the right. |
