 Not to confuse matters but this is also the Birmingham Canal- a short arm. Unfortunately out of the image but the higher Northern channel flies over the lower Southern channel to make this arm.

The "large load" is here the Smethwick Gauging Station that until WW2 spanned the stop gauging boats as did the existing one at Tipton. Boats on the BCN were gauged empty so that when full they could tell the weight of their load by the depth they were in the water & charge them accordingly when moving onto the BCN from another canal. |

| The Birmingham Canal splits here into two waterways which go off to the right, close to each other, finally joining together again off picture. A sort of dual carriageway on the canal. |
