Wakefield Kirkgate Station, on the Hallam, Pontefract, and Huddersfield lines.
Today the main staffed station for Wakefield is Westgate, off the image on the right.
Kirkgate station is the oldest station in Wakefield, opened 1840, the building is 1854. Demolition work in 1972 included the roof and buildings on the central platform. The station was listed in 1979.
The station goods warehouse was demolished in 2008, also the year part of the remaining station wall collapsed.
In 2009, due to its state of dereliction, then Transport minister Lord Adonis dubbed it "the worst medium-large station in Britain"
In 2013 the remaining unused canopies were removed. |
