View looking east over Colwyn Bay town centre with the North Wales Coast Railway line to the left of shot serving Colwyn Bay railway station. The sea is out of shot to the left. The main road along the North Wales Coast was at this time the A55 which comprised Abergele Road and Conway Road in this photo. Generations of holiday makers will remember queueing in traffic along this road. The A55 Expressway dual carriageway road opened in the 1980's and cut a swathe through this scene and reduced traffic congestion. |

I lived on Abergele Road, just up the hill from St Pauls from 1977 to 1980 & can recall some of the tailbacks due to a truck jammed in the walls of Conwy. Also taking the 'long way around' when heading to Holyhead. Down the A470 at Black Cat corner to Betws y Coed, across the Waterloo Bridge, up the A5 to rejoin the A55 at Bangor. Half of the motorists who use the A55 expressway now don’t know that it could take four or five hours to get to Holyhead from Colwyn Bay on a bad day. |

Colwyn Bay. Considerably changed round the station as the A55 now slices right through the town but there are one or two distinctive buildings on the main road that snakes down from top to bottom - the church and the building on Conway Road at each side of the end of Hawarden Road, and the building at the (nearly) bottom right of the photograph is on Conway Road at the corner of Queens Drive. |
