The excessively high chimney was not for getting rid of the boiler house smoke but more for getting rid of the fumes from the viscose production. The foul smelling fumes had to be carried as high as was possible with brick built chimneys at that time. |

The actual product produced was Viscose rayon. Viscose was the main product produced, or processed, by almost all of the Courtaulds plants around the world. Any photo having Courtaulds on the description on this site would be of a Viscose plant. One does not have to be confused with the wrongly captioned photos on the Spondon tag which show the British Celanese site at Spondon wrongly named as Courtaulds. Courtaulds did not take over British Celanese until 1957. British Celanese produced Cellulose Acetate based chemicals and fibres at its Spondon site. |

This is the works in centre of shot in photograph WPW040156. This photo(WPW018858) is the right way round. The office building shown in both photos is still extant and can be seen today on Google earth. The gatehouse is also extant. The area has changed considerably in recent years and the bulk of the works has gone. The photo WPW040156 is reversed which makes this identification difficult. |
