The large house in Debdale Park still stands but is sad, old and empty. The M60 motorway now skirts the top of the reservoirs and golf clubs line the shores.
The modern photo shows the reservoir as it is today - complete with knitted plane! |

The Reservoirs ensure an area of open space in an increasingly urban area. The gardens at Debdale Park can be seen alongside a mix of housing styles.

The rise of the Council Estate. Do any of these streets exist today? Yes, we checked them out on old maps and compared them to the new!

Taken in 1931, this image shows a different kind of home - the dawn of the Council House Estate. Wide, crescent-shaped roads (people walking, no cars)new shopping units and for the first time many people had their own gardens. It was a huge improvement on the back-to-back houses in the heavily industrialised areas. We believe that the playing fields are still well used...but did they ever complete that road?

Just after the war has ended and we can see a change in housing, in the attractions at Belle Vue Gardens and in the landscape. Can you see the allotments? We think the increase in allotments was due to the Dig for Victory campaign during the war...

Just a stone's throw away from the heavy industrial areas, people could pay to visit the Belle Vue Zoological Gardens. At this location we can compare images 20 years apart...what changes can you see?

lots of railway sidings and large buildings...are any still there today?

One of the earliest images we have looked at. Heavy industry, lots of chimney's, trams not cars and lots of cramped back-to-back housing.
