| 'The Wharf House' was one of very few buildings to survive the wholesale demolition of this area. It functioned as a pub until 2007, I think, and was then converted into apartments. |

| The line of Speedwell Street is about the only element of this area of Oxford, that still remains after the slum clearances of the 1950s - the area was entirely reshaped and rebuilt.

| 'Oxpens' Road was so named, because it was the site of Oxford's cattle market from 1932 until 1979 - by which time it was a bit of an anachronism for a city such as Oxford.

| The road sweeping in from the left is 'Oxpens Road', which was subsequently extended beyond this dog's leg and was driven through all the 'blighted slum dwellings' (t.sharp, 'oxford replanned' 1948) that you see to the right. Fascinating photo. |
