One of the steepest inclines on british railways at 1 in 37 and a very difficult climb given (usually) a standing start out of Exeter St David's straight on to the incline and a pretty sharp curve to boot! |

| Planning vandalism? The intriguing thing about this photo is this lump of masonry which hasn't been cleared away and is in direct line with the city wall which then continues in a straight line to Northernhay Gardens to the right in the photo. As all bomb rubble had been cleared away by 1947 could this be part of the Roman city wall which was then bulldozed to make way for the shopping area at Eastgate?
If so then this is just one photographic record of the planning vandalism that occurred in bombed cities in the UK in the immediate aftermath of the war when councils found it easier and cheaper to demolish partly damaged historical buildings rather than restore them. |

| This bombsite later became the site for the Express & Echo building until recently Exeter's evening paper. the photo doesn't quite capture the actual area which was about 50 yards to the north (left) in the photo.
In 1954 a dead whale was exhibited in a water or some other liquid filled container on a trailer. Does anyone else remember this? |

| This was to become the site for the building of Bobby's, Exeter's largest and tallest department store (now John Lewis). The cinder black bomb site was still evident until building started in about 1957/58. As kids we used to play on this bomb site whilst waiting for the Whipton bus to take us home after a visit to the Savoy cinema. |
