| This building and all the others on the left towards Heworth were the Pelaw Co-operative buildings started early 1900. The Town of Pelaw didn't exist before the Co-op and it attracted workers so housing for them had to be built. Pics of it and the area are on my www.oldtyneside.co.uk |

| Pelaw Co-op actually started before the town of Pelaw existed. When the Co-operative decided to set up their factories here there was just farm land, then houses started being built for the workers and the new town of Pelaw was born. |

 The rail line used by coal trucks that descended using gravity to the Pelaw Main Staiths, and then when emptied they were hauled back up to Springwell by wire rope. The photo form my website www.gatesheadeast.couk shows the staiths area where that rail line terminated. |
