The four gun emplacements of 411 Coastal Battery, 540 Coast Defence Regiment, Royal Artillery. The guns fitted were 5.5inch naval guns, previously removed from HMS Hood. Their range was less than 18,000yds, so were unable to reach enemy shipping off France. After use as a training battery, a change of tactics led to them being used as a 'flash' battery. Here, the guns were fired without shells to confuse enemy ships in the hope that they would alter course and present targets to the 9.2ins battery at South Foreland and / or the 15ins Wanstone battery.
