Allotments. In 1939, the Ministry Of Food ran a highly successful propaganda campaign 'Dig for Victory' which encouraged civilians to grow produce to ease the forthcoming food shortages. Apart from suburban gardens, city parks were ideal for this use and by the end of the war, there were 1.4 million allotments throughout the UK. |
