The Crocodile PH

The Orchard pub, burnt out and temporarily replaced by the single storey wooden hut adjacent. Rebuilt some time in the 50s.

The Reliance Garage, at this time mostly dealt with trucks. Later became a Renault dealership.

What was St Benedicts Lane, the remains of buildings that incorporated the old city wall, can be seen at one end, that whole area appears to have gone, i suspect from ww2 bomb damage. The remains of the city wall survive, and are a feature in 2019 , being part of the footpath now along Barns Road. ie, that footpath once was where St Benedicts Lane was.

Wensum City Bridge, St Crispin's Rd Sth side (pic 1933) St Crispin's Rd. No previous structure had been erected on this site. In 1880 a company was formed to promote a Bill through Parliament relative to a proposed railway line between Lynn, Fakenham and Norwich. The city petitioned against this but agreed to withdraw it upon the promoters undertaking to build a road between Barn Rd and Oak St to be carried over the Wensum by a bridge. Station Rd and the bridge (built largely of steel) were the result. Constructed by iron founders Barnard, Bishop and Barnard in 1882, the latter was a single span of about 50 feet. In 1972 the northern section of the inner link road was completed involving the construction of a second bridge. Of reinforced concrete, this carries the northern carriageway, the older bridge remaining to take the southern lane. Station Rd then became divided between St Crispin's Rd and Barn Rd.

Platform One. (pic shows it derelict in 1969) Considering Norwich City Station was the main terminus on the M&GN line it is surprising so little of the structure remains. During the 1970’s, when the inner ring road was under construction, the platform infill was robbed out and used to build the mound on St Crispin’s roundabout and as hardcore for the duelling of nearby roads. The houses on Barker Street were demolished and the road extended south east. In 1976, local photographer Mark Dufton visited the site before the foliage took over completely and found the bay platforms. From 2011 Friends of Norwich City Station (FONCS) began digging at the site to preserve what is left of the station and surrounding buildings. Their work was focused on Platform One where a wall was found and the bay area cleared of undergrowth. Their hope was to uncover all the railway related parts to the area and turn it into a memorial garden as a tribute to the station and all who served the railway, including planting flowers and small bushes, notice signs and information boards of old pictures and M&GN benches. According to Jon Batley of FONCS, most of the station remains are there but were buried under tons of sludge when the river bottom was dredged. It is just a question of digging down to it.
