PERRY BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER TAME...ALSO KNOWN AS THE ZIG-ZAG BRIDGE AND BUILT IN 1709. IT REPLACED A WOODEN HORSE BRIDGE BUILT IN 1612. THERE WAS ANOTHER BRIDGE CROSSING THE RIVER NEARBY MENTIONED IN 1309 BEING THE FIRST....PRVIOUSLY THEY USED THE ROMAN FORD CROSSING. (c.f. HOLFORD (or OLDFORD) would take its name from this river crossing)
THE ZIG-ZAG BRIDGE CONSISTS OF 12 ARCHES BUT ONLY 3 ARE NOW VISIBLE. |

Opened 1929 by Birchfield Harriers Athletic Club on site of ash tip for local power station. Club relocated to the new Alexander Stadium in 1977. The site also hosted Speedway in 1928 and again from 1946-60, having been a prisoner-of-war camp in WWII. The site was converted to a greyhound racing stadium from 1990, replacing the neighbouring venue closed in 1984, & reviving the Perry Barr Stadium name. Speedway returned in 2006 with the reformed Brummies. |
