I remember this turntable well – it survived at least into the mid 1960s although by that time it looked a lot less well cared for. This seemed to be a strange place to put a turntable and I do not recall seeing any evidence of this one being used. The site has now been redeveloped into a car parking area.
This turntable is one of three shown on the Godfrey edition of the Stockton (North) OS map dated in 1899; the others are one in the new NER built engine shed (opened in 1891) and one associated with the shed built by the Leeds Northern Railway, located near the junction of Durham Road and Bishopton Lane. The 1859 6 inch OS map of this area only shows the turntable associated with the early engine shed and no others. This leads me to believe that this extra turntable near the Phoenix Sidings footbridge was installed by the North Eastern Railway to provide locomotive turning facilities south of the station during its extensive 1891/2 rebuild. |

The construction of this school started in the 1930s but work was suspended after the outbreak of WW2. Building was recommenced after hostilities ceased and the buildings were opened on the 2nd November 1951. The girls' school was the end nearest to Oxbridge Avenue and the boys' school at the opposite end. The only common facility was the dining hall to which each of the two schools was connected. Much of the field to the west of the site was used for the boys' school rugby pitches which extended up to the railway's boundary fence. |
