This is Littlebury Tunnel south portal. The tunnel portal is Grade II listed. 'Railway tunnel portal. 1845 by Robert Stephenson for the Eastern Counties Railway. Egyptian-style, yellow brick and stone. Upward-tapering brick facade, surmounted by stone cornice and entablature. Tunnel mouth formed by semicircular stone arch, within five concentric receding rings of brickwork, all springing from a rusticated stone plinth at each side. The tunnel was built in order to preserve the privacy of Audley End House.' |

Thanks Class 31 (do you like 'toffee apples'?), it was the tunnel that gave it away. I was following railway lines on a 1931 map in the area of other photos taken on that date. |
