The turbine blades are hollow, with open tips. The rotation of the windmill compresses the air, forcing it through the blades and down the inside of the hollow tower shaft. This powers an air turbine-alternator unit in the wider section at the base of the tower, thus generating electricity. The air exists through the louvres towards the base of the shaft |
