Erith: Saint John the Baptist
St John's, Erith is one of the six ancient churches lying within the London Borough of Bexley.
The church of St John the Baptist was originally built in Saxo-Norman times. It was subsequently rebuilt in the post-Medieval period, in part out of materials salvaged from Lesnes Abbey after it was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1525 (the abbey would have been but a short cart-ride away to the north-west). It was substantially rebuilt again in 1877. |

The Nordenfelt Tavern, named after Thorsten Nordenfelt, was known as the "Pom Pom" after the QF1 Machine gun. The QF 1 pounder, universally known as the pom-pom due to the sound of its discharge, was a 37 mm British autocannon, the first of its type in the world. It was made at Erith by Maxim-Nordenfelt then Vickers, Sons & Maxim. |
