The 2nd. St. Augustine's R.C. Church built here, and opened in 1908, after moving from Granby Row due to redevelopment of the area for the large Engineering School and the continuation of Whitworth Street. Destroyed during the December blitz of 1940. The parish then moved over to the Holy Family R.C. Church, in nearby Grosvenor Square. |

Holy Family R.C. Church was the day chapel to the larger St. Augustine's R.C. Church on York Street. When St. Augustines was destroyed in the bombing Dec. 1940 the parish moved to the Holy Family Church, which eventually was demolished approx. 1968, to make way for the third St. Augustines, 1970. |

Dunlop General Good Division, previously Charles Macintosh. The first commercial rubber factory in the world. Many of the surrounding buildings were part of the business, and didn't close until around 2000. I worked in the labs there 1977 - 1984, fascinating but dirty and smelly place. |

This chimney belongs to a power station on Bloom Street, opened 1901, which also provided district heating from 1911 by means of asbestos insulated steam pipes laid along the nearby Rochdale canal. The Palace Theatre was warmed by this means. |

Manchester Piccadilly Gardens. The lowered square central area was the basement of Manchester Royal Infirmary which had abandoned this site by 1914. In modern times the gardens have been filled in and are mostly concrete with very poorly turf which as to be renewed very often. There is now a multi story building on the left hand side of the gardens which makes the rest of the area prone to be always in the shade. |

Canal Street. In days of horse drawn boats this was the "towpath" for the canal alongside, now it is a drinking area in Manchester's "Gay village". |

Manchester Crown Court at Minshull Street (not to be confused with Manchester Crown Court which is elsewhere...). Built in 1873. There have been modern glass extensions since. Busy Crown Court but not used for the highest security cases nor for murder cases (which go to the other court near Deansgate). Minshull Street Crown Court is currently used for most cases from Greater Manchester Magistrates Courts other than from Manchester City Centre Magistrates court. |

Mayfield Road Station, connected by bridge to Piccadilly (formerly London Road) station. Used as a parcels depot and in the 60s as an overflow station for Piccadilly (eg commuter trains to Stockport). It was used in the tv program "The Last Train" as although now derelict and unused, many railway artefacts (eg buffers) remain. |
