St Mary's RC Orphanage School. These buildings were one old barracks that housed troops based at North Hyde Gunpowder Depot during the latter part of the Napoleonic Wars. The Gunpowder Depot extended over a large area to the right with its own extensive dock running off the canal.
The orphanage closed in 1950 and the buildings demolished soon after. |

It wasn't so much as an explosive works as a gunpowder depot (North Hyde Gunpowder Depot.) It was set up by the military during the Napoleonic war. It had its own arm (North Hyde Docks)which serviced the depot and which is in the area now occupied by Wentworth Road and Convent Way. The depot was closed soon after the end of the Napoleonic War and auctioned off by the Government in 1832. It seems that depot canal dock was also filled in. https://www.flickr.com/photos/45101643@N04/4234248897/in/photostream/ The old barracks buildings by Southall Lane were utilised for use by St Mary's RC Orphanage, which survived until 1950. |
