Clay was brought up the River Ouse from a pit to the east of Piddinghoe. This is now water-filled. The clay was moved out of the pit in the north east corner using a 2ft. gauge railway onto a landing stage, which was still there in the 1960s. |

Lewes Portland Cement and Lime Co. Ltd (owned by Glover & Batchelor) had made cement since the first decade of the 20th century in the Navigation Pit to the north of this, but installed the rotary kiln at this site in 1928. In 1929, the company was taken over by Eastwoods, and the sign on top of the silos says "Eastwoods Lewes Cement". The plant at this time made about 60,000 tonnes of cement per year. |
