This could be the western edge of the newly-established Asbestos Works on Tolpits Lane, which was certainly in place before 1938.

Other images in this area would seem to indicate the presence of the large, distinctive white buildings of the Asbestos Works by the spring of 1933.

Although there is very little written history in the archives about this factory, it would seem probable that Universal Asbestos Manufacturing Company became established on Tolpits Lane in 1930.

Extensive playing fields, including cricket pitches and athletics tracks. A swimming bath and miniature rifle range would be added by 1938. The writer played cricket for Watford Boys' Grammar School Colts XI against MTS, in May 1958, on one of the junior grounds.
