Hebburn had THREE Pits, and this one is the 'C' Pit adjacent ot Ellison & Lyon St.

The famous Wallsend ship yard of 'Swan Hunter & Whigham Richardson's' where the Mauretania and many more were built

This was a Local Army HQ, as can be seen by the Parade Ground, Flag pole. Before the Factories came there was a Rifle Range that led down towards the river Tyne.

Its difficult to see but this is the Theatre Royal next door to the Hotel that opened in 1897 and in 1950 was burned down, so only 53 yrs old. I lived across the road diagonally and as a 6 year old watched it burn down on a Friday night, Oct 7th 1950.

This is the 'Ellison House Hotel' on the corner of Lyon St & Prince Consort Rd . Next door was the Theatre.

In previous years this was James St, but later changed to Prince Consort Rd, after Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria.

St Aloysius Presbytery, which would be called a Manse in Scotland or a Vicarage if it was Church of England. It is where the RC Priest's lived.

This light coloured property on Prince Consort Rd/Carr St junction was cheap lodgings for the poor named a 'Doss House'. Men would pay a penny to sleep there but no bed. They slept standing up hanging over thick ropes.

This expanse of derelict looking land was where the Tennant's Chemical Works was (later the Alkali Chemical Co) & by 1935 they'd moved out leaving such a mess. Hebburn Urban District Council started using the land nearer the camera as a municipal rubbish tip which grew to be massive. It is all now buried under the grass & trees of the landscaped riverside.

In earlier years this was the 'Portland Cement Work'. I don't know if it still was in 1935 though.

This is what we called Reyrolle's 'bottom works'. The Firm was split by the Newcastle to South Shields railway line.

Hawthorn Leslies Ship yard. Mr Leslie came from Scotland to Hebburn in about 1853 & started his Shipyard a year later. One of the most famous ships built there was HMS Kelly commanded by Lord Louis Mountbatten in WW2.

Hebburn folk don't know a lot about this factory known as 'The Bauxite'. As Bauxite is an aluminium ore we know it was an aluminium manufacturing plant. When they pulled out of Hebburn they left large mounds/hills of red toxic waste. When it rained the wastes turned into a mud & orangy water ran off it. If it got on your clothes it was like a Dye. Luckily the waste was fenced off but it was still a messy area.

This was an industrial Reservoir. As kids in the late 40s early 50s we played there & caught little fish called sticklebacks. Sometimes there was a raft on it made by older kids. I've been on it using a pole to push the raft along. It wasn't very deep so fairly safe.

Martin's Bank which in later years became Barclays. It is still standing today & a Funeral Parlour. The photo shows the Bank in the background of my photo.

The Reay Gear Works which moved into the Sheds built in 1919 for the Newcastle Shipbuilding Co that went bust after just two years. The sheds lay empty until the late 20s when Reay's took it over.
