 My memory is fading but is this Bells Asbestos? We visited the factory on a school visit from Slough Grammar School in circa 1957/8. I remember the asbestos dust covering most surfaces. The girls/young ladies were making gloves/blankets etc. |

No, Bells were a bit further north along the Farnham Road, with the "Bestobell Man" ( a statue showing their fireproof suit) outside |

| This was the site of the Community Centre(?) where I was sent on Saturdays - 1955 ish - to learn ballroom dancing at the age of 10. I preferred to be on a football or cricket pitch but that's parents for you. |

But a great way to meet girls later! The centre had everything, beer, darts, dancing, swimming, rollerskating. I never went to no posh grammer school, we had to walk a mile and a half each way along the "cinder track" to go swimming, we caught pneumonia walking back afterwards! |

Come,friendly bombs, and fall on Slough.....easy to understand John Betjemans anger in his poem. A pleasant little market town turned into the prototype industrial estate. |

mixed feelings, my dad hated Betjeman, yet dad was born in Cippenham village, off pic to left, just a cluster of houses at this time he bought new house in Ivy Cres (he had hated granny Goddings 16th century cottage where he has bought up, loved modern conveniences) the trading estate provided him with work for 50 years despite being made redundant. Betjeman apologised for this poem. I like him and now live in W Cornwall Of course this is very early in Development of Slough/Cippenham, you should see it now! |
