Reyrolle's 'bottom Works'.

This factory was known as 'The Bauxite' & run by a company producing Aluminium. As a little lad in the 50s the factory had long gone but it had left behind a mess. There were large mounds of reddish orange bauxite waste & it covered quite an area of land but at least it was fenced off. We kept off it because it got on your clothes & shoes & stained your skin orange.

This road was renamed Prince Consort Road but originally it was James St.

This pin is outside the rear of the Theatre Royal on Carr St. The theatre opened 1897 & at one time was run by Stan Laurel's dad Arthur Jefferson. (Stan of Laurel & Hardy fame). The theatre burned down in Oct 1950. Clipping from my website www.oldtyneside.co.uk

The Ellison House Hotel on Lyon St Prince Consort Rd corner. It was badly damage when the Theatre Royal next door burned down in Oct 1950 but re-opened later & survived a little while longer. Newspaper clipping from my website www.oldtyneside.co.uk

These are multiple slipways along the riverside that were going to be used by the Newcastle Shipbuilding Co when they started up in 1919. Unfortunately times were hard after WW1 and they went bust in 1921.

Whites Marine factory on Prince Consort Rd.

This derelict land is where the Tennants Chemical Works started mid 1800s later becoming the 'United Alkali Company'. The House near the river I've added a pin to is Tyne View Terrace & belonged to the Tennant's Co.

These building belonged to the Newcastle Shipbuilding Co who started up in Hebburn 1919 but unfortunately went bankrupt in 1921. The buildings & land down to the river stood empty until the end of the 1920s when a company called the 'Reay Gear Works' took over. They made gearwheels & gearboxes for industry. Later George Angus took over & later still possibly late 50s early 60s Richardson Westgarth took over calling themselves RW Transmissions. They closed down in the mid 1970s & the land is now a housing estate.

the walker ferry landing and the BONE yard (rendering plant) were in this area and the smell was, lets say awful to be polite you could smell it miles away if the wind was right
