The Bristol tram system was based on the 4ft 8.5inch standard gauge, and started in 1875 as a horse-drawn system. It was electrified from 1895 onwards, and at it's peak covered 31 miles. Closure started in 1938 when buses started replacing the trams - the last two routes closed abruptly in 1941 when the power supply was destroyed by bombing.
