The Airedale Foundry was run by Kitson & Co, one of the main constructors of steam locomotives in Leeds. The company was famous for the Kitson Meyer articulated locomotives that served on the incredibly demanding railways of the Andes such as the Transandine which linked Buenos Aires in Argentina with Santiago in Chile. The route - 156 miles of it metre gauge from Mendoza to Los Andes - included gradients of 1 in 12 utilising the Abt rack system and a summit at 12,450 feet!

At least two of the 0-8 + 6-0Ts, built circa 1907-10, survive - one at Los Andes and one at Quinta Normal in Santiago. [Source: David Joy, Engines that Bend. Atlantic Publishers, 2012, 85-87]
