Here is a classic photo of how the May 1942 bombing changed the city. Prior to the blitz there was no direct route from Paris Street to Magdalen Street but after the war and parallel with Archibald Road, Western Way was constructed as an inner by-pass link to Magdalen Street with a new roundabout at the bottom of the then flattened Paris Street. |

This was a very modern looking building with sleek clean cut lines and would have been taken for post war construction. |

"Contained elements of the original Roman structure"?? It did no such thing. Designed by Charles Fowler, it was completely new in the 19th century! |

Please note that this image is due to be renumbered to become EPW003659. Unfortunately this means that all comments and tags will be lost. The prefix EAW implies a post-war date, yet we know that this photo pre-dates the war, hence the need for change. Apologies, Laura (Britain from Above Cataloguer) |

This image is definitely a pre-war view of Exeter. It was given a date of March 1947 in the Aerofilms Ltd post-war register and I've automatically catalogued it as such without paying attention to the content of the image. I know the history of Exeter quite well having lived there for 13 years, so I'm thoroughly ashamed of myself! EAW003657, EAW003658 and EAW003660 are also pre-war, and I will change the details ready for the next data upload. We have got some stunning post-war images of Exeter coming up, taken on the 18th May 1947, showing the extensive damage suffered by the city in the blitz. Look out for EAW005852, EAW005853, EAW005854, EAW005855, EAW005856, EAW005857 and EAW005858 in the next upload. Best wishes Laura Maddison Britain from Above Cataloguer |

Thanks for that Laura. I look forward to the post-war photos. The thirties photos show just how unique and medieval Exeter was before the blitz and for an Exonian like me is a fascinating glance into a long disappeared moment in time. |
