Originally Middlestown goods station, located on the ex Midland railway's Royston (Barnsley) to Dewsbury goods line. The line was part of a scheme in 1898 link the Midland main line with the Settle-Carlisle line forming a new London-Scotland line vis Dewsbury, the Spen Valley and a tunnel under the centre of Bradford. Only the Dewsbury portion was built.

Knew this route quite well. The only local route to suffer bomb damage in the 1939 - 45 war. The only victim a light engine when the leading wheels fell into the crater. Exact spot of enemy inflicted derailment unknown.

The line left the LMS route Leeds, Normanton Sheffield or joined it depending upon direction at Royston Junction to connect with the LMS route Normanton, Mirfield, Brighouse, towards Lancashire at Thornhill Midland Junction.

A flyover junction existed at Middlestown Junction where the line ducked under the line from Dewsbury Saville Town then continued to Thornhill Midland Junction
