Gatwick Airport Station - probably one of the earliest airport stations in the world and certainly the first in the UK ... but only there as it was the old Racecourse Station. However it shows the smart business management of the Southern Railway that it went with the competition rather than ignoring it. ... and how long did it take to link that great planning disaster - Heathrow - to the rail network ... another 50 or so years! |

The Beehive building - still there today but not part of the airport. |

The comment about the station is not quite correct - the old airport railway station was close to the 'Beehive' and connected to it by a pedestrian subway running underneath the apron and directly into the terminal building. A great integrated transport system! The racecourse station was just behind the old grandstand which was demolished to make way for the new (now South) terminal building. The present station platforms are those of the old racecourse station. My father was the Secretary of the old airport company and I sometimes visited him in his office. We also used to walk back through the old racecourse |
