Gallowgate Central Station, No 11 Lambert Street, Glasgow This station was built for the North British Railway as part of its Bridgeton branch, and opened in 1892. It was similar to other North British Railway stations in Glasgow in having a booking office at street level, with stairs leading down to platforms in cutting. This shows the surface block from the north-west, its bold architectural treatment making it look more like a bank than a railway station. It closed in 1917, as a result of competition from tramway services. This building was occupied in 1966 by J R Dalziel (Casings) Ltd, butchers' outfitters. The North British Railway built its short Bridgeton branch from High Street partly to counter impending Caledonian Railway competition, and also to provide a terminus for suburban trains from the west. It was closed to passengers when the north side suburban services were electrified in 1960. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN. |

Cold Storage Depot, No 39 Melbourne Street, Glasgow This shows the Melbourne Street frontage of the store. It is brick-built. Note the use of pilasters and a dentillated cornice to break up the apparent bulk of this otherwise daunting block. The Armour Street frontage, to the left, is similar, but longer. This was one of a number of cold stores built, or adapted from other premises, in Glasgow in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when refrigerated ships began bringing in frozen beef from the Argentine, and later chilled lamb from New Zealand. Locally slaughtered meat could also be chilled for storage. This store was built in 1913-14 for the Union Cold Storage Co to designs by J W & J Laird, architects. It was a massive windowless building, with four floors above ground, and two below. It was built mainly for the storage of meat, both imported and slaughtered in the nearby city slaughterhouse. I also assumed this was am entrance to the station but, looking at old O.S. maps(1896, 1913 & 1930s), I think it's more likely an old goods office/cattle office. It appears to have been connected by a footbridge, not to the station platform, but to the centre dock of the cattle sidings. Looking again at the aerial photograph, there is no staircase running down to the passenger platform from Sword Street. Just my thoughts. DH |

Stables and stores, Nos 9-11 Brandon Street, Glasgow These premises were built in 1896 for Mair & Dougall, bottlers, whose main premises were in Annfield Street, nearby. The firm no doubt kept a fleet of horse-drawn delivery lorries, based in this building. This shows the building from the south-west. The delivery lorries would have been kept on the ground floor, with the stables above, as suggested by the row of roof-ridge ventilators. The stone frontage was probably to fit in with adjacent tenements. This building was apparently disused in 1967, and was demolished soon after. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN. |
