St. Woolos Cemetery, Bassaleg Road entrance. St Woolos Cemetery, Newport is notable for being the first public cemetery in Great Britain. The fourteen acre site now contained within the present cemetery, formerly farmland worked primarily by the tenants of Cefn-Perfedd Farm, was purchased from Lord Tredegar in February 1854. Before 1854 there were no public cemeteries in Great Britain. A private cemetery at Kensal Green, London, was opened in 1837 followed shortly by Highgate Cemetery, London 1n 1839. |

Stelvio House on Bassaleg Road, Newport
was the home of the important 19th
century industrialist, Charles
H Bailey. It was spot listed on 20
March 1996 by Cadw, Welsh Historic
Monuments in recognition of its archi-
tectural and historic importance but developers McCarthy & Stone were fined £200,000, plus costs of
£13,000, for subsequently demolishing what
was one of Newport’s most important
historic buildings. |

Did not know about the large formal gardens of the house. I think the large dark area in the grounds is a fishpond. It is shown on the OS map of 1921 as such, but by 1937 is was shown as cleared for housing. |
