Latham Street. This was the site of a land mine explosion in 1941. Many of the surrounding streets were badly damaged and the number of temporary houses seems to reflect this. Bow Common Gas Works. Every Saturday morning in winter, coke was available for fuel at about one shilling a half hundred weight. Some kids used to run a racket when they bought and delivered coke for older people by taking coke from several of their full sacks to make up an extra one and so gain a shilling.
