The first V1 aimed at England fell here on the northern side of the railway bridge in Grove Road on the June 13, 1944. Six people were killed and about 200 homes were rendered useless. |

I don't think we should forget that the 'beastly' Hun's as they were referred to in the Great War, also came over London and unprovoked, again, bombed innocent women and children 25 years before the Blitz of 1940. At this site the Infant School, now named the Mayflower School, 18 children between the ages of 4 & 11 were killed by one explosive bomb dropped during an air raid on 13th June 1917. We must not forget. |

Emergency water supply for fire fighting? Only a guess at what this is but there were several in the images of Poplar and the Isle of dogs. |

No doubt about it. These walled water tanks were specifically for fire fighting and were scattered all over London. At the outbreak of WW2, there were 38,000 AFS personell (Auxiliary Fire Service) to bolster the regular fire service. |

Still exists. Run from the junction known as the Eastern (after the Eastern Hotel at the corner of the East and West India Dock roads plus the start of Commercial Road) and ended at the junction with Mile End Road.
The eastern hotel later became known as the Londoner. |
