Launceston Town Square where on 26 September 1943 black troops and white troops opened fire in a short firefight over the right to drink in Launceston's pubs. 50 rounds were fired resulting in 2 white military policemen laying injured in the square. 14 black ringleaders were put on trial and were given prison sentences, 3 for 20 years, 11 for 11-15 years all with hard labour. Local British troops were sympathetic to the black troops. It is still possible to see some of the pock marks made by the bullets in some of the buildings around the square. |
