The captioned placemark 'radar tracking system for lasham airfield' is an inaccurate description for what is in fact an RDF (radio direction finding) station. They were known as HF/DF or "Huff-Duff" which is a bit of a misnomer as these stations operated from received VHF signals not HF. It appears to be similar to many sites around the country that had 30 feet high wooden towers surrounded by an octagonal brick built blast wall. Probably part of the RAF system of fighter control, although they were also used as D/F stations by the 'Y' Service. Details of a 'Y' station site can be seen here: http://www.iwhistory.org.uk/archive/newsapr13.htm |
