| Deptford Station's "carriage ramp".
Deptford opened in 1836 and was the Greenwich-London line's first terminus (the line to Greenwich wouldn't open until two years later due to the need to build a lifting bridge over Deptford Creek). It is thought to be the oldest suburban railway station in the world still in active service.
Deptford also provided the maintenance depot. The short carriages were stored under the arches when not in use. As the main line was on a viaduct, the depot was accessed by a "Carriage Ramp". If you zoom right into the photo, you can still see the point where the ramp originally connected to the main line.
Later platform extensions to the station itself have long since cut the ramp off from the railway, but the ramp still exists and is a Listed structure.
Only the original sections of the platforms, and the Carriage Ramp itself, date back to 1836. The station's entrance buildings are much more recent. |

When the line opened, this was the first terminus. Greenwich station opened a little later as it was not yet completed; the construction of the lifting bridge over Deptford Creek was the cause of the delay. (The present Greenwich station was rebuilt when it became a through station and is much younger than the one at Deptford.) |
