The building in the foreground is Chaseley, on South Cliff, Eastbourne, a registered charity formed in 1946 following the donation of the mansion and the sum of £50,000 by Lady Michaelis. At the extreme left of the shot is Bolsover Road, the house on this corner being Hillcote, a girls’ school (later converted into flats) which was controversially demolished to make way for the South Cliff Tower, a 19-storey block built in 1965.
