The signalbox was not destroyed by fire due to an arson attack. BR destroyed signalboxes this way to avoid demolition costs. This box had gone out of use before 1971 - The signalbox on the Liverpool to Preston line contolled the junction for what had, by then, become only a siding for the Metal Box Company.

Aintree CLC Junction signal box, opened 1923, the top section of the signal box was destroyed in an arson attack on 26th December 1971 and the signal box was closed.
