Pretty sure this photo was taken during the first Civic Festival and Gala Week, 14th to 21st July 1928. Where the crowds are arranged in a circle were displays of folk dancing, puppet shows etc, as well as a 'Shapeliest Ankle' competition - way haay! |

This is a really interesting photo. Does anyone know what the event is? There seems to have been plenty to entertain the visitors at the various tents and booths on the field. I'm struggling to interpret the items that are lying on the verge alongside the road. Any suggestions? |

If the sign on the small dark building lower centre reads "?? Dance Studio" maybe they are watching a demonstration of the Charleston? |

Having now looked at a much enlarged second photo, I can see that the building sign states Midland Bank xxx, and that there is a piano on the stage |
