Nice to see my old primary school in these photos.I attended Ellerslie School from 1956 to 1960.I am still in touch with some of my classmates from those times and can name quite a number of others too.My teachers were Miss Cole,Mrs Bell{music},Mrs Scott-Farthing,Mr Williams{football and sports},Mr Evans {Headmaster}Miss Sancere,Mr Redstone{supply teacher} and Mr Mercer who made our lessons great fun.I also recall our school crossing lady Mrs Riley who was based at the Bloemfontein Road zebra crossing.I recall seeing the actor James Hayter at the school when he was rehearing for his part as Friar Tuck in the film of Robin Hood.We were taken to the Shepherds Bush Empire one day to watch a BBC show being broadcast and the main attraction was the appearance of a young singer,Laurie London, who sang "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands"My mother who was watching at home, saw her little Douglas wearing his smart new tie among the audience as the camera panned around. My fifteen seconds of fame! |
