Bury Atheneum - Opened in 1850 and demolished in 1971, two weeks before it was going to be Listed which would have preserved it. Replaced by Atheneum House a far more ugly and nondescript building. |

This railway line heading off to the right passes under Knowsley St and Manchester Road and then turns sharp left and right joining the Manchester-Bolton St line (forming a triangle) and going on to the bottom of the image to Rawtenstall. |

Buckley Wells Sheds - now an independent locomotive works dealing with preserved steam engines. The railway line passes out of the top of the picture - this was the main line to Manchester Victoria, which used a rare early electric "side contact" third rail.
The Bury station was "Bury Bolton Street" still used by the ELR.
When this line needed replacing, it was recommissioned as a light rail line (Metrolink). There was a new terminus and a new bus station, not in this image, but this line still joined with the tram line.
This line is now part of the preserved East Lancashire Railway. |

Hi Wadey, I've added three pins; please add more of your own to help orient the image and show what's there! Yours, Katy Britain from Above Cataloguing Team Leader |

Yes it is. The giveaway here is that at the top near to where Manchester Road and Knowsley St join there is a small park with a monument, these still remain. |
