Redcatch Park:Bowling Green and Tennis Courts. This area had been allotments during the construction of the Knowle Park Estate, before becoming one of the valued green spaces in south Bristol, just prior to the Second World War. Wartime bomb shelters were erected in Redcatch Park and later tree planting in the park uncovered remains of at least one shelter and rubble from bombed houses. |

Knowle Cricket Ground & Tennis Club, with Bowling Green. The Knowle Cricket Club had been founded in Victorian times (1850s) and the first record of cricket being played on this well-appointed ground took place in 1894. Somerset used the facilities at Knowle in their county championship programme for June 1926 (against Hampshire), June 1927 (Worcestershire) and August 1928 (Essex).
The famous Knowle Tennis Club was formed in 1893 and a good friend of this contributor, the late Derek Walkerdine (1936-2011), wrote a history of the club in 2007. A University Alumni Reunion event for the Geography Class of 1965 was held at the Tennis Club in July 2005 and a most enjoyable occasion it was too! |

The interwar council housing estate at Knowle Park (Knowle West)was part of a massive development in the 1930s to the west of the Wells Road, which saw the construction of 6,000 homes for 27,000 people in both Knowle and Bedminster. The standard of the housing was high and was based upon the popular Garden Suburb movement of the time. Many of the folk housed in the above image had been relocated from the inner city slums of Bristol. The writer lived in lodgings in Woodbridge Road (late Edwardian street, circa 1914), Knowle, for nine months from October 1962, during his first year as an undergraduate at Bristol University and thus parts of this area became familiar. |
